    Driveshaft wall thickness

    Hello

I am thinking of having the driveshaft tube on my 71 LT1 replaced. I know the tube diameter is 2.25 but I don't know the wall thickness. I was told by the shop that they could get tubing with a wall thickness of .120. Is this the same thickness as original? Has anyone had this done to a driveshaft that could give me some info on it? Can anyone recommend someone that does this that would meet NCRS standards?

    Thanks Dave

    Re: Driveshaft wall thickness

The specs for my 73s show an od of 2.0 and a wall thickness of 0.120 for the manual and 0.095 for the automatic.

      Driveshaft balancing

I just got mine back from Quanta. It came back looking brand new. I wouldn't recommend it for a very rusty driveshaft because the polishing process does remove some metal. Anyway this post reminded me to ask about balancing. This was something I was going to look into as part of the rebuild process. Can any good machine shop do this?

Thanks Tom. I really appreciate the info. Clare, I went to a specialty shop that does driveshafts, rearends etc. I think a machine shop could do it if they have good machinists but the cost would be high since it would be special work. Don't know where you live but in the Cincinnati area there are three companies listed that do driveshaft repair. They have the round weights that are close to the original but they do not have the small rectangle shaped weights.

        Thanks Dave

          Clare -

Take it to DTS (Drive Train Specialists) over on Groesbeck - they'll get it balanced for you.
