THE GAUGE ON MY CAR HAS ALWAYS READ 180 AT IDLE. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, IT CLIMBS TO 220+. I HAVE CHECKED TO COOLING SYSTEM AND EVERYTHING IS WORKING PROPERLY. THE CAR SHOWS NO SIGNS OF OVERHEATING.I HAVE CHANGED THE SENDING UNIT SEVERAL TIMES WITH NO CHANGE. I WAS TOLD THAT A SPIKE OF CURRENT CAN CAUSE THE GAUGE TO READ HOT AT HIGH RPM (AS THE ALTERNATOR SPINS FASTER) I DISCONNECTED THE ALTERNATOR AND RAN THE CAR. THE GAUGE WOULD NO GO PAST 150. AFTER RECONNECTING THE ALTERNATOR, I TRIED A 80 OHM RESISTER IN LINE OF THE GAUGE. THE GAUGE WOULD NOT GO PAST 130.BEFORE I REMOVE THE GAUGE FROM THE CLUSTER, ANY IDEAS?. IS THERE A WAY TO PROPERLY MATCH THE SENDER TO THE GAUGE?

There are miles of threads on this subject in the archives. If you aren't worried about judging points, get a sending unit from Autozone (Wells TU5) for $6 and try it. No sealer on the threads. If you are concerned about origianlity, Lectric Limited has a repo out that is supposed to be properly calibrated as well. Costs around $20.
Steady voltage is essential as well. Check your oputput from the voltage regulator, and also check all the connections at the regulator. A loose connection can make the VR do some strange things.
If you have access to an IR thermometer, check the actual temp of the system before you do anything else.- Top
