I need to paint a mid-year console dark blue but in the correct semi-gloss texture. I searched the archives but didn't find anything definitive. This may be a stupid question but I'm not a painter. Does anyone have a formula of paint vs. flattening agent to achieve the correct amount of gloss (or lack of)?

Re: Mixing console paint
John, you should use the same brand flattening agent as your paint. Different types of paints (lacquer, urethane, etc.) may use different flattening agents.
The product sheet for the flattening agent should tell you which paints can be used with the product. The product sheet for the flattening agent will also tell you the mixing proportions. Even with those mixing proportions, my experience is that flattening is still a trial and error process requiring extreme accuracy for repeatability.- Top

Re: Mixing console paint
You will have to practice this to get it right especially if you use Laquer. I did mine with base/clear and the R&M store mixed up some clear with the flatener in it (talcum powder), they have 4 levels of gloss, go for the mid level one. I had them mix mine too flat and had to add clear to get what I called semi-gloss.
The factory colors are flatened so the interior would not blind you or anyone else, they called them: flat, semi-gloss, semi-flat, and gloss I think. May-be others will help with the terms. Be careful--semi-flat means just that; (not much)-flat and is more glossy than semi-gloss. David- Top
