    seat belt webbing - cleaning

I am looking at cleaning the webbing on a set of black belts rather than replacing. They are mostly stiff and dirty with just a little bit of rust marks. I was intersted to know if anyone has a good method and/or product for doing this or is the old bucket and laundry detergent the way to go? I am sending the rest into Ssnake Oyl for replating but would like to retain the original webbing and labels if possible. Thanks, Eric

ERIC! I talked about the seats in a post I did about the cushions. And again go to a upholstery shop and using thier steamer will clean and soften up your belts. Try it you'll love it.

I just had my belts rewebbed by Stingray Sity and he was a strong advocate for the laundry detergent. I have a pair of 74's that need cleaning before I sell them and this is what he suggested.

I have had very good luck cleaning the webbing on a 66 and my 72 with a semi-stiff brush and Simple Green. I pulled the webbing all the way out, jambed a screw driver in to keep everything from recoiling and then soaked the belt in SG. Left that to sit for a few minutes and then scrubbed. I rinsed them and resoaked them in SG several times until no more dirt came out. I still own the 72 and the belts look and work fine. Btw, leave the belts fully extended until completely dry.

          Re: thanks for the ideas...

Since mine are out of the car and they don't retract the idea of steam or detergent sould work out. I wanted to see what others were doing and one again you guys came through! thanks, Eric
