What is the proper finish for the cast iron base on a WCFB? I have been told that they are supposed to be painted black. If so, what type and color(flat, semi-gloss, etc.) of paint? Also, what about the finish on a 2X4 aluminum manifold. I have seen several posts that indicated that they were painted with aluminum paint from the factory. True or false?

Ed, It is my understanding that the carburetor base had a black oxide coating applied. Also, the 2 X 4 manifold was never painted aluminum. I personally have had success applying Aluminum Navel Jelly to the bare manifold, scrubbing it around well with a toothbrush, keeping an eye on the process and washing it off throughly with water. -

Jim, How would one go about reproducing this black oxide finish? I didn't much think that aluminum manifolds were painted with aluminum paint, but some forum responders have mentioned this. "Aluminum Brite" in a spray bottle also does wonders. Mainly phosphoric acid.Comment

Hi,
You may want to check the archives. There was a good thread on black oxide a couple of months ago. One possibllity that I would suggest is the use of gun blue. This gives a finish very close to black oxide. Be aware, however, that gun blue (and black oxide) is not a real quality finish. Unless you keep it well oiled, it could rust. Also, the metal must be well cleaned & free of any kind of oil (even from your hands) to get a consistent finish.
I bead blast the part before the gun blue application. Apply the blue & keep the part soaked for about 10-20 seconds. Then wash the part in mineral spirits & use a soft brush to remove scale. Finally, I use WD-40 to 'oil' the part. If done correctly, you will get a rich black finish.
You can get gun blue at K-mart or any gun shop.
