Inside of Rear Bumpers Rusty on1969

The outside of my rear bumpers look great, but the insides are rusty. What is the best thing way to restore them?

Rust on the inside surfaces of these bumpers is VERY common. If you want to clean them up, I think that your best bet is to clean them with a wire wheel on a drill as best you can and clear coat them for longer-term protection. Although I've never used the product this way, you might try a coating of a product called "Extend" before you clear coat. This will render any rust you don't get with the wheel "inert" and "stabilized".

You could also use a chemical rust remover (acid-based product like Jasco Metal Etch), but if you do this you may also remove whatever chrome is present.

joe and allen: regarding Extend, a product i've used for years. its a super product that works super to prevent rust. i use it on all battery trays before i paint them . However,if allen intends to have the c-3 judged, the Black/charcoal color that is inherent with EXTEND will be frowned upon as the unexposed surfaces on the c-1 thru early c-3 bumpers were of a silver color. not sure if they were silver by virtue of their "fresh" raw sleel or whether they actually got a shot of silver-like paint. nonetheless, i always blow a thin coat of argetnt silver rally wheel paint on the unexposed surfaces of said re-chronmed bumpers on cars i'm having judged. if you go with Extend., let it dry overniote, then blow a thin film of rally wheel silver over the dried Extend. mike

After wire wheeling, I masked the bumpers and spot-blasted all the areas the wheel could not reach. This worked great and spraying with the Rally wheel paint has left them in good shape going on four years now.

Another product you might want to consider is Cold Galvanizing Compound. Its made by Rustoleum as an aerosol. It is described as a "zinc rich coating" It dries to a dull metallic finish.Its available from industrial supply houses. Be careful of the fumes. I coated the inside of my bumpers 3 years ago and have not seen any rust. The method I used was to spray some in the bumper creating a puddle then rocking and rolling the bumper to coat all exposed metal.
