78 pace cars

Does anyone know how many 78 pace cars were originally announced to be built?The # built is apparently greater than # first announced

Don't have my book handy at work but I think the original amount was something like either 100 or 500 but then they agreed to build one for every chevy dealer at the time which was 6502.

I have the sister ship. A 78 Silver Anniversary (L82/Auto).

The original quantity announced was 300 to honor the number of cars built in the 1953 model year. Due to greater than anticipated demand, the quantity was revised several times finally settling on the number of Chevrolet dealers at the time (about 6,000) plus a few extras.

The final build quantity released by Chevrolet was 6,502 but other quantities have been published.

I went to the race in 78. They even had a pacecar at the airport, down at
one of the concours. I was lucky enough to have a couple pictures of the
pace parked in the pit area with it's proper flags attached to the rear
of the car. I also took a picture of the pace car with the Borg-Warner trophy
next to it. Of course I have the race program.
My personal opinon is that the 78 pace car is the finest corvette pace car
to have been made. The going price back then was 25k.
