    68 Starter Question

I purchased and installed a newly rebuilt factory correct GM starter for my car and when starting it frequently does not catch on the first try but spins before engaging the flywheel. Sometimes it grinds against the flywheel before finally engaging and then it starts the engine just fine.
It was purchased from one of the well known rebuilders in the Corvette hobby.
I will remove it but not certain what to do in terms of repair once I have it on the bench.
Is it the solenoid or is it the spring in the bendix drive being to stiff or could it be cold grease. (I live in New England where it is pretty cold these days)
    Thank you for any help.

I think that the best thing to do is to contact the rebuilder. Give him a chance to give you advice before starting to replace pieces.

It probably needs to be shimed. Bill

          Bill,
Can you elaborate please and also explain the "why" behind the procedure. This is a learning experience for me.
          Thanks,
          Kurt

I was afraid your were going to ask that. I dont know why but many times when a rebuilt starter is installed it needs to be shimed where it bolts to the block. This changes the angle or distance from the starter gear to the flywheel. They can be bought at parts houses I am not sure if dealers have them? The mechanics at work (Chevy dealer) used them in the old days. I would contact the rebuilder of your starter he should be able to help. Sorry I dont know more ... Bill
