I realize from reading old postings that the M-22 is kind of rare. Was it available as an option on any vette or just on certain engine combinations. If so what models was it standard/optional on?

Re: Muncie M-22 (Rarity)
Rick --- Yes, the M-22, factory installed in Corvettes, could be considered "rare". In most cases, its use in Corvettes was limited to the competition engine option [L-88's in '67 (20 units), '68 (80 units), & '69 (101 units) or '65: L-78 (20 or 30 units) {but not listed on the order form}, 66: L-72 (15 units), '70: 25 units (ZR1 option), '71: 130 units (ZR1, ZR2, LS6 options), '72: 20 units (ZR1 option). Others may be able to provide the numbers of M-22's installed in Corvettes in '73 and '74.
But to put this in perspective, a total of 30,960 Muncie M-22 transmissions were produced from '65 to '74, mostly installed in high performance versions of Big Chevies, Chevelles, Camaros, Chevy II's, starting in 1968. Also many were sold over-the-counter at GM dealers
Excellent articles and data can be found in Alan Colvin's book, and a Spring '99 RESTORER article by Al Grenning.- Top

Re: Muncie ?
Rick,
FYI, I don't know if Chevrolet was trying to "dump" its stash of M-22 transmissions, but in Chevelles in 1971 and 1972 the M-22 was the ONLY 4 speed available when the 454 engine was selected.
The M-22 was also offered in other makes (Oldsmobile W-30's for sure, I'm not sure about Pontiacs or Buicks).

Re: Muncie ?
With regard to the '71-72 454 usage, the Muncie used in general practice was not a true m-22, rather a "heavy duty" M20 or 21 which used the heavier duty M-22 Mainshaft and accompanying tailhousing, but kept the earlier M-20/21 internal gears. As such, it had neither the gear "Whine" of the M-22 nor the gear strength. These transmissions used the regular M-20/21 order codes. One additonal use of M-22's was in Pontiac SD-455 GTO's. .- Top
