Re: zl-1 block
There was a great article on the ZL1 in the October 2002 Vette Views Magazine written by an engineering student who was present there in 1969. He claims it depended upon who was in the paint booth on that particular day with coverage varying from 5% to 100%. As a minimum there was always some overspray from the oil pan on the lower block. The Author's name was listed as Kenneth W. Kayser.- Top

Andy-----
The original ZL-1 engine assemblies were UNPAINTED, BARE ALUMINUM. All of the stamped steel pieces associated with the engine (e.g. oil pan, timing cover, brackets) were painted SEMI-GLOSS BLACK.
The waterpump used on ORIGINAL, 1969 ZL-1 engine assemblies was a CAST IRON waterpump which was painted SEMI-GLOSS BLACK. Later SERVICE ZL-1 engine assemblies MAY have been equipped with an unpainted, aluminum waterpump.
Chevrolet orange was NOT used ANYWHERE on original ZL-1 engine assemblies or SERVICE ZL-1 engine assemblies available during the 69-72 period. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
