I've taken the top (airhorn) off a 62-65 AFB (3721) and mated it to the base of a modern Carter AFB (9625). This is so that I can use the original air cleaner and gas lines and a non-original Holley bolt pattern intake manifold on my '62. Might as well put a Zip kit in too while it's apart. Question is what to set the float height? Here's the various heights my research found.
Zip kit instructions: 7/32
HP AFB book: 9/32
ST-12: 5/16 (10/32)
Federal Mogul manual: 3/8 (12/32)
Edelbrock manual: 7/16 (14/32)
The current Edelbrock and Carter AFB carbs should be the same. Don't know why they'd specify different values.
My understanding is that this specification is very important. Any idea why all these reputable sources are so widely divergent?
BTW, the 9625 was on the car last year. Ran great. When I took it apart, I found the floats were set at about 1/4". I'm leaving the 9625 jets and metering rods in place. Only thing changing is the air horn. Choke and linkages will be another question.
