    C1 oil pan.

The oil pan on my 62 is dented pretty bad and rather than take a chance on a crack developing trying to fix it, I thought I might just find a good one. Is there any stamping number or anything unique to the 62 such that any other 327 oil pan wouldn't work and look original?

    Re: C1 oil pan.

I'd like to know where to find one that will pass NCRS judging for a '62. The catalogs I've gone through all state there's will not pass muster.

            Re: C1 oil pan.

            Jack-----

For the most part, 1957 through 1974 Corvette oil pans were "uniquely Corvette" pieces. Other pans can be used in many cases, but they won't appear correct and there may even be minor fitment issues.

Over the 1957 to 1962 period, there were several oil pans used on C1s. The basic, external configuration was the same, but there were, I believe, some differences in internal baffling. Such internal differences also produce minor external differences (i.e. the vestiges of spot welds, etc.). Also, the tooling marks present on the pans may change over the years as tooling wears. Although C1s are not a particular area of expertise for me, I feel very confident that the progressive die set used to produce the basic 57-62 Corvette oil pans was the same for all years. Such die sets are VERY expensive and I doubt that GM would have been interested in changing them for a low-volume piece like a Corvette-only oil pan.

As far as I know, there exists no "reproduction" oil pan, per se, for any 57-62 Corvette. What does exist is a GM-available replacement oil pan applicable to all 1957-62 Corvettes. This oil pan is identical to the last previously available 57-62 Corvette oil pan EXCEPT that the front oil pan sealing radius has been revised to the 75+ style radius in order to use the 75+ style front oil pan seal. On the car, the difference is virtually indiscernable.

The GM oil pan described above for 57-62 Corvettes is still available under GM #359937. It is the only oil pan still available from GM for any 1955-74 Corvette small block. Some folks scoff at this pan as an easy-to-tell-from- original piece. However, I can assure you that the external differences from the original pans are VERY minor and amount to what I call "nuances". If I were looking for an oil pan for a C1 Corvette I'd use this pan in a second and be thankful that I could still get a part like this from GM for a vehicle that was last produced almost 42 years ago. So, if you're willing to sacrifice some very minor "nuances of original detail", you can have a BRAND NEW pan for you car that's virtually the same as your original. Save the drain plug from your original pan, though, and use it with the new pan. The drain plug supplied with the new pan is not the same as original.

By the way, I'll bet the folks that scoff at this pan will be the same ones willing to pay BIG $$$$$ for one after it's discontinued by GM. At the present time, this pan is still available from GM. For how much longer, who knows? You don't think that GM is going to have this thing available forever, do you?
