    '56 oil pan-differences

Are there any differences between '56 corvette oil pans and '56 passenger car oil pans with 265hp? I know that the early 600 or so corvettes had the dipstick on the right side and that it went directly into the oil pan. I need to know about the later models with dipstick on left side. Thanks.

    Gary------

All 1956 Corvette oil pans were unique to Corvettes and certain HD trucks. The truck version used a threaded fitting in the side for some purpose and the PRODUCTION Corvette pan did not. Many SERVICE pans had the fitting which was unused on Corvette applications and was plugged.

The later 1956 Corvette oil pan with left side dipstick (i.e. no provisions on oil pan for dip stick tube)was the same as 57+.

C1 Corvette oil pans have a "5 quart" capacity. Most passenger car pans were "4 quart".

      Joe,
Was there any difference in where the drain plug was placed? Centered? Towards the back? As always thanks.

I think that they were more-or-less centered on the bottom of the deep part of the sump. However, I'm not 100% sure.

              Joe,

Are there any creases at the edge on the middle of the three steps at the bottom of the '57 oil pan or just is smooth like the other two steps. Thanks.

                Vass-----

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that there were no "creases" as you describe in the original 1957 pan steps. It's possible, though, that at some point in manufacture of these pans the tooling became worn to the point that these creases developed in pans produced. Then, when the tooling got bad enough, it may have been refurbished/repaired and the creases went away. It's just a guess, though.
