    Powerglide ID

What can tell me if a powerglide is for a 53-54 Corvette? What is different that would mean its from a Corvette and not just a passenger car? Currently its hooked up to a six with numbers 3835499 E232. Sounds to me like May 23, 1952-am I correct?I haven't seen the block, but no suffix letters seem to be present.

a 50 to 54 chevy pass car PG will have a tailhousing to accept a torque tube rear end. the 53 and up Corvette powerglides were open rear end/ open drive shafts and hence the vette tailhousing will accept a slip yolk which would in turn accept a conventional open drive shaft u_joint. also the 56 up vette trailhousing will have provision to mount a shifter on the tailhousing. mike

The Corvette out put shaft is shorter ( car out put shaft won't work in a Corvette) and the Corvette has a open drive shaft. Also the shifter linkage indicator L/S is different for the safty switch ( has a hole for the rod)those are the easy way to tell.

Mike, I'm not familiar with very early Corvette Powerglide applications. I knew that 53-54 shifters mounted to the body and not to the transmission, but was not sure if the 55 was the same. I take it from your post that the tailshaft of a 55 Powerglide would NOT have shifter mounting bosses, and the shifter would mount to the body like a 53-54. I ask because I have given information regarding the availability of a Corvette Powerglide tailshaft to someone. The transmission is asserted to be a 55, but has mounting bosses on the tailshaft housing. I don't want to misdirect someone who is trying to get his car together right.

The 55 had NO mounting boss on the tail housing, the shifter was mounted on the body tunnel as was 53 to 54.
