I can't tell from the assembly manual, were lock washers used with the nuts that hold the 3 levers onto the transmission shafts?

Yes. Flat washers too. I'm also going to put medium strength threadlock on mine.- Top

Chris, I noticed the reverse lever fits tightly on the shaft, with no play, before the nut is installed, but the other two levers have play in them. They don't appear to be worn, they just don't fit as tightly onto the shafts.- Top

Re: '67 4SPD TRANSMISSION LEVERS ATTACHMENT
I just did mine today. Where is the play? The lever has a slot that fits on the shaft which has a key. My reverse lever was also much tighter than the other 2. But the other 2 didn't have much play. All the play should go away when you tighten up the nut.
Is the key on the shaft coming out pretty flush with the end of the lever? When you put the nut and washers on, it'll draw it out. The shaft has in and out play, which is normal. Maybe your lever isn't going all the way onto the key on the shaft.
Is the key worn? The levers?- Top

There's no wear on either the shaft or the levers. I just noticed how much tighter the reverse lever was, with no play, compared to the other two. Were there washers and lockwashers on your levers originally?- Top

Yes, there were flat washers, lock washers, and nuts with a dimpled underside on my transmission gear shift shafts. All 3 nuts and washers were the same. Now I presume they'd been off and on a few times before I got it. But all transmissions I've ever seen, had lock washers. Makes sense to me. This is not something you'd want coming off. I distinctly remember this, because I had trouble with the levers coming off once on another car. Even if you're wrong, what's the harm? Lock washers aren't going to hurt anything.- Top
