    Piston 3795709

A cam, intake, and carb change has blossomed into something much larger and I'm trying to decide if I could tear the engine apart. I snapped some pics this evening.

Can anyone identify piston 3795709? - they all have the GM casting. The engine is NOM and is a '67 327 casting 3892657 code HC.

Also, It looks like all the bearing caps are marked 1-8 with dots. Can I assume that the factory did not do this and that someone has been inside?

I'm perplexed as all the gears and the oil pump (and pistons) are GM - it even has the nylon faced cam gear. I doubt that anyone would rebuild an engine and replace everything with GM components. Maybe someone did a simple re-ring and left the rest alone?

    Brian

HC is a 327 1966 to 68 275 HP 4 barrel, PG,passenger car. the punch marks are not from the factory. is the bore std 4.000? years ago GM sold parts for rebuilding engines and if you had a connection with a dealer for a discount you could not beat the prices.

      Brian------

I agree with Clem-----the punch marks are not factory-applied. Given their presence and the fact that this engine looks like it still has the original factory paint (i.e. you can see the "HC" code through it), I'd say that this engine has, at some time, received an in-car "bottom end rebuild" or a "ring and valve job" with the block staying in the car.

        4577 crank?

        Joe/Clem-
Would it make sense for this motor to have the 4577 forged crank? I haven't removed the heads yet.

        thanks

327 small journal crank. chevy changed the journal size in 1968 on 3.250 stroke cranks

            Brian----

Through 1967, ALL 327 crankshafts were forged steel. The nodular cast iron type didn't begin until the change to the large journal in 1968 that Clem referred to.

So, if this engine is a 65-67 327, then I would expect it to have the 4577 forged crank.

Beginning in 1968, most 327s got nodular cast iron cranks. The exceptions were 1968 L-79 used in Corvette and some other Chevrolet cars and some MD/HD trucks with 327.
