I guess it was the first design brake caliper's that had the plastic insulator. I have 3 question's. Is anyone reproducing the insulator and what was the difference in the standard insulator compared to the J-56 option? Has anyone seen any NOS one's sell, and what kind of price? Thanks much john

Brake caliper insulator
John,
The 1st design calipers used a brown Pyroceram insulator. It's not plastic. The J-56 used a thicker insulator. To the best of my knowedge no one is reproducing the Pyroceram insulators. In the past few years I've seen some of these come up for auction on e-bay, but it is rare. I can't remember the prices.

Re: Brake caliper insulator
Gary and John-----
For the 1st design calipers (used from 1965 through very early 1967), the pistons for the standard brakes, J-50 and J-56 were exactly the same. They all used the same "thin" Pyroceram insulators, front and rear. 1st design pistons also, of course, used the piston guides on the rear.
The 2nd design calipers with J-56 used the "thick" Pyroceram insulators. Otherwise, 2nd design caliper pistons used no insulators on the pistons. 2nd design pistons used no guides.
The only NOS 1st design pistons that I know of are the few car sets that I have and NONE of these are for sale.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
