    Drum Brake Anti-chatter springs

Anyone know if Anti-chatter springs used on all 4 wheels on 63's with Drum Brakes? And if so, were they painted (semi-gloss black) with the drum or left natural?

    As always, thanks?

    Joe,

I believe the anti-chatter springs around the outside circumference of the drum were only used on the front. I gotta believe they were painted with the drums. I painted mine anyway.

I figure paint is easiler to remove than rust and if the judges don't like it, at least I will.

        Joe,

The 1963/64 NCRS Judging Manual says that the brake drums and backing plates are painted semi-gloss black. Since the judging manual (Second Edition) does not make any comment on the anti-chatter springs which by the way are on the front brake drums only, I'd say they would be painted the same as the drum. My 1964 convertible front drums have the springs painted and have been judged as being correct. Note, this was at the 1984 NCRS national meet at the Copper Mountain ski resort in Colorado. Sure wish they'd have one there again, the location was execellent.

I hope this helps Joe. By the way, I am enjoying watching the progress on your '63. Keep the pictures coming.

        Best Regards,

Thanks all... And thanks James for the comments. I'm plowing along.

I had already painted the springs so that helps. However, I had picked up all 4 at the time. The car only had the front two on it when I got it. So that makes sense also. They didn't come off all that easy so for both back ones to fall off would have been difficult.
