I have been using spy-bot and ad-ware for over a year now. I was shocked when i first ran it and discovered how much spy ware was on my computer. I have a hardward firewall (DLINK 704P) and this free software one is a nice addition. My Norton anti virus had just expired so the free one came at the right time for me. It seems that you hear about new virus attacks every day, Is anyone doesn't have protection there is no excuse now with this free program. If anyone isn't protected not only are you risking your computer you are in danger of infecting others on the board.

Actually, Larry, I think Ad-aware is for finding "data miners" rather than viruses.

Data miners are planted by the websites you visit to gather information on the sites you visit and what you shop for in order to tailor direct marketing targeted specifically for you. I ran Ad-aware last night after my wife visited TicketMaster's website to check on some Aerosmith tickets, and found she had gotten five new "bugs".

Most "data miners" are benign as far as causing you computer problems, but I have begun to suspect that some portion of the tons of spam I receive are from "data miners" stealing personal info from my computer. My paranoia also makes me think that Microsoft is in on this scheme since these data miner plants seem to work perfectly with the new XP operating system. This would explain how they are able to bypass firewall programs and hardware.

I hope that everybody here is running a fire wall and virus protection and anti spam.

If not get one up.If you dont know what they are go to a staples/office max/office depot and one of the computer Geeks can explain it.

Your cost will be less then $80.00 and the benifits are besides security you will speed up your computer alot.

I had zone alarm and pest patroll and both had expired.I purchased nortons internet suite 2004 and it seemed to always be working in the back round using up my ram and slowing things down alot.I just installed a Mc Affe suite and am pleased with its performance so far.

I know this is a tecnical board but with the notice of the virus prior I feel its important to make the folks aware of the bad stuff on the internet. If your running a dsl or cable conection dont be with out protection.

          Good Luck and be safe

Yes you are right the spy programs are responsible for all the popups you may be getting. I used a popup stopper and still was getting tons of popups a good indication that you are getting popups generated by spyware is if you get popups on this site. Most popups only occur on sites you visit that use them, but spyware programs will install popups that will come up while you visit other sites. When you get them here you falsely believe that the NCRS site is using popups when in fact they are being generated by another site you may have visited. (here is a free popup stopper)

that is why I use a virus program in addition to a hardware and software firewall plus spybot and adware. While some snoop programs are just annoying others can be vicious; they can record all your keystrokes, change your home page and steal other personal information such as passwords. If you want more info this site can give you more details about how spy programs work( http://www.cexx.org/adware.htm) We have to guard against a number of different problems and need different programs and devices that are specifically designed to keep us safe from various attacks.

So what is wrong with getting a free year of anti virus protection? all Anti virus programs charge you to renew every year. I paid for Norton and had it for a year then when the year was up I had to pay if I wanted to continue to get up dates. so instead of paying to renew Norton I got a free year with CA. If someone gave you a free cell phone or free cable TV to use for a year but you had to pay if you wanted to keep after the free year would you complain? If you don't have a anti virus program here is a free one, if you don't want to pay when the year is up you still got free service for a year. I don't see the down side.

wasn't trying to get your hackles up, which it appears I did - I was only pointing out that the software was FREE for a year and then you needed to pay -there are several FREE (completely FREE) alternatives out there if you are so inclined.

I personally have always used Norton, only because that is what my company has used for the 10+ years I have been with them. Prior to that, my 21+ years in the military, we used Norton and McAfee in combination, depending on where the software/hardware was placed

                    What's A Popup?

Actually, I haven't had a popup problem since I gave AOL the boot years ago.

When I got my new computer, I think popups tried to start up (mysterious small popup or two lasting half a second or less). Once I loaded ZoneAlarm Pro and set up the parameters, the popups stopped.

I think the type of sites you visit can also have a big effect on the amount of excrement that gets sent in your direction. I am not saying you do this, but as an example, I would avoid online porn sites like the plague.

I also have MailWasher which permits me to open, delete and bounce spam/vicious email back to the sender from the mail server before it even reaches my computer. This requires me to look at the sender and subject line of each email before deleting it, but I would rather do that than lose something legitimate.

I now accept email only from people I know, but even then you can get something that they don't know they have. Then, I have to rely on my virus protection and ZoneAlarm...I have had both programs alarm simultaneously to prevent an infection.

You didn't get my hackles up, I was just confused as to why anyone would think that a free year of anything wouldn't be a good thing. I was just trying to point out that all programs make you pay every year to renew. I wasn't aware of any free programs that didn't charge a yearly fee. If there is a completely free alternative out there please let me know where I can find it, I would love to stay protected with out paying a yearly fee. I'll use my free year with CA and switch to your free one when my year is up. Can you please give me the link?

                        Re: What's A Popup?

No porn sites but I visit two sites that are loaded with popups IWON and POGO. I am a pretty good backgammon player, I have a master rating above 3,000 and pogo is the best site that I know of where I can play backgammon with people from all over the world. The down side is the popups but my popup stopper kills them before they can launch.

Larry: Zone alarm provides a free firewall software program with no annual fee for as long as you want to use it, and it is a very effective protection program.

I have been using a D-link 704p router as a hardware firewall for a few years. I only added the software firewall because it came with the free anti virus program. the free anti virus program is the program I am most intrested in. If anyone knows of a free anti virus program that does not charge a yearly fee please let me know. Right now I am just happy to find a free year of virus protection.
