    New '65s to be rated: L84 @ 385hp, L76 @ 375hp ?

Got my " 1965 New Product Training Program Booklet" today (thanks, eBay). It's printed July '64, and shows these two motors at 10hp more than the '64 versions. Not a typo 'cause it appears on the power trains page and on the engine tune-up chart. What's up with that ? To my knowledge, there were no tweaks for the '65 versions. This is the first time I've seen these numbers. Kinda like the '66 L72's @ 450hp, but they caught this pre-production.

Never heard of this before, but it's sure interesting!!!

I think both engines are overrated at 365/375 even with the rather loose standards of the old SAE gross ratings that were used, and as far as I know both engines were complete carryovers from the '64 versions, however, very early '64 versions may have had carryover '63 distributors with less aggressive ignition maps, and the early '64 L-84s had 375R (recalibrated) FI units rather than the final 380 versions. I don't think either of these changes would have effected peak power ratings.

    Are the peak torque ratings different? L-76 is 350 lb-ft @ 4000; L-84 350 lb-ft @ 4400-4800.

      Duke --

      Per the July '64 Training Program Booklet, the L76 was (to be ?) rated 350 ft-lbs @ 4000 rpm, and the L84 was 350 ft-lbs @ 4200 rpm.

This particular booklet had pencilled-in numbers reducing the horsepower ratings to the familiar values. Also, the L84 torque was "pencil-revised" to '@ 4600 rpm', or the middle of the range that you quote, and which appears in the Owners Guide. The '65 shop manual supplement shows L84 torque as 350 ft-lbs @ 4600 rpm.

The new L79 has the familiar hp and torque values (350hp and 360 ft-lbs), but at the same 6200 and 4000 rpm as the L76 and L84, which is the same as found in the Owners Guide. Pencilled corrections in the Training Manual change these to the familiar 5800 and 3800 rpm, which appear in the Shop Manual. The showroom brochure shows L79 torque @ 3600, rather than 3800.

Still, this is the first time I've ever seen those 385 and 375 hp ratings, even if they never made it to the decal stage.

Boy, they had a tough time figuring out the real numbers, eh?

The L-76/84 torque specs I quoted are from Covette News Vol.8 No. 1 in a table on page 20 that is part of an article on the new Corvette features for the '65 model year.

The L-79 is rated at 350HP @ 5800 and 360 lb-ft @ 3600. The 250 and 300 HP ratings are the same as I recall from 1963 and 1964. The only changes to these two engines were distributor and carburetor calibrations, which didn't affect peak output rating.
