Back and bottom painted black to keep it from being so ugly when viewed from the rear.

As Wayne so simply put it, you are paintig the bottom side and side's (as far as you can see from most angles) of the muffler's with black spray paint (some overspray is expected and acceptable, but don't get crazy with it). This was GM'S way to enhance the view from the rear of the car. You either saw the color of the car, the chrome, or the tail lights. No massive ugly aluminum colored exhaust mufflers. I've completed this on my 73 with the use of Plasti-kote T-3 Hot Rod Black, available at any NAPA parts store. Hope this helped.

I just use Krylon Semi-flat Black. It's one of the few places I use it (even though many people use it for seemingly any black).

Use 2-3" wide masking tape on the lower edge of your rear fender. Stick a large piece of cardboard between your muffler and your spare tire tub, as well as a piece on the ground to protect against overspray. Now spray away from the outboard side of the muffler as well as the rear. Voila!

If you're anal like me you can take wax and grease remover to the muffler first. If you want it factory correct, some POD (paint-over-dirt) is correct.
