    GM Reconditioning Paint

GM discontinued the #1050104 one gallon cans of reconditioning paint some time last year. This product was a black coating that was ready to spray on almost any surface and produced a satin finish with no orange peel. I've done a nation wide search to locate some for purchase but have come up empty handed. Does anyone know where I might purchase some or who manufactured this product for GM? Is there another product out there with similar properties?

    Thanks, Phil

Philip, if you have done a nation wide search, then that's going to eliminate the usual Corvette vendor suspects. Quanta Products would have been my first suggestion, but you must have checked them.

In this situation, you need a vendor that can tap into the NOS/dealer network to find discontinued parts that remain in stock at large dealerships. One vendor I used that was good at finding discontinued parts was Willcox Corvette Department (link below; contact info only). I received parts from Willcox that still had the stocking GM dealer's name and address on them.

You might also try Bair's Corvettes; they also have connections to the Corvette vendor/NOS market and are very successful at finding stuff if they don't have the part you need.

Eastwood makes a similar product. I am at work so I don't have access to a catolog. If one looks at a catalog I think the equal match will obvious.

        Thanks for responding Chuck,

I called Willcox and they were well aware that there is none to be had. They are fans of the product and have put away a supply for thier shop that is not for sale. Quanta says they tried to get a distributership for the product but that the EPA is responsible for stopping production of the product as it is formulated. Kem Krest was distributing it for GM, but I'm not sure of who actually batched and packaged it.

I have already searched through GM inventory nation wide. I believe it was discontinued in May last year. I don't believe that it's all gone. I just think its being horded. And I don't blame those who are keeping it for themselves. I'd do the same if i could find some.

There is nothing like it that I'm aware of. If you ever used it you know what I'm talking about.

Your John Deere dealer has (or can get) John Deere "Blitz Black" in both liquid and rattle-can packaging; it has the same "eggshell" black appearance.

PPG has/had a product that is equivilent to the GM paint. I cannot remember the PPG #. I think that it was 99..

Quanta has it listed on their newly revamped website as being available. DOn't know if they actually have it though. http://www.quantaproducts.com/paint/paintindex.html

Hi all, Eastwood paints are at 1-800-345-1178 or www.eastwood.com. I bought factory gray high temp coating from them at a suggestion from John H. on this line but have yet to use it. (I don't work for Eastwood).....Pete

Hoarding??!! Whodathunk It! Based on feedback here and in conversations, it didn't seem to me that one restoration in twenty or thirty used it, probably because nobody wanted to spring for a whole gallon. Most restorers would rather buy Krylon 1613 or John Deere Blitz Black in spray cans.

Oh, I have used it; it was prime stuff. Provided a very nice finish and nearly fool-proof to apply (forget about runs; just hang the part like it was dipped and spray away). Smelling the fumes was also a nice fringe benefit ...probably why the EPA won't talk to anybody about continuing production.

                    Thanks All !

I think I'm going to give Eastwood a call and order thier underhood black. Have any of you tried it? It is lacquer base, so it will probably apply and dry close to what the GM product did. They claim that it has the correct gloss.

I believe that I've exhausted my search for the GM product. I've been using it for 25 years and it's just hard to give up those old habits. LOL

                    Thanks again, Phil

I've use the reconditioning black in the past as well as the John Deere Blitz black. Found both to be very comperable. Blitz black is easy to find. I will be using it on the 54 I'm presently doing.

                        Phil,
I use PPG 9300 tuxedo black flattened to an eggshell sheen by my local PPG supplier. The factory used this same lacquer formulation when they shot the blackout paint on our cars, and it is still pretty hard to beat. The lacquer dries almost instantly and goes on without a high ammount of build like enamel paints. A single quart of black lacquer will probably black out at least 3 or 4 cars!

                        Regards, John McGraw

                          If you can find it.

FWIW, our largest local jobber is down to his last couple of gallons of lacquer whatsoever. My friend just paid $50 for a quart of the black.

                            Parick,
That is one of the nice things about DDL 9300, it is only available in factory-pack cans. You Jobber should be able to order it for you even if he does not stock and mix lacquer anymore. There is allways Autocolorlibrary.com as well, they will mix any PPG Color in lacquer. PPG is not stopping production of lacquer, the jobbers are just not stocking it anymore. It takes up space that can be better served by better selling products. It is probably not long before the internet sellers have the majority of the market for lacquer. This is one of the great thing about the web, small niche markets are not so small now that a buisness has access to nationwide markets. A local business cant afford to stock lacquer products since they sell only to a local market, but the big internet sellers have a much wider customer base.

                            Regards, John McGraw

I checked my GM dealer and he says he can still order the paint but I have to order 4 ( must be a case ) It is pricey at 65.$ per gallon
