'65 Carter AFB Metering Rods. . .

A friend and I both have '65 300 HP cars with Carter AFB 3721SB carbs. Both carbs have primary metering rods with 16-199 stamped on them. These rods mic at .070/.064. We live at 7000' elevation and both cars are running rich and so we would like to go one step leaner for cruise. Can any of you suggest the appropriate rods? We tried Carbs Unlimited with no luck. Other sources???

Not sure, but I believe Summit or Jegs sells individual rods. I know they sell strip kits which contain a variety of rods and jets for this purpose. There's also another place on the Internet that sells individual rods, but I've lost their url. Research the Edlebrock web site for information on rod and jet sizes.

I'd suggest a smaller jet. Federal Mogul still has some jets
for AFBs as does Edelbrock.

Look at what's available and compute the annular area of the jet minus the rod. About 10 percent less area would be a good starting point.

Also reduce the area of the secondary jet by 10 percent.
