My 62 has the pipe outlets for the crossovers crunched together and then welded shut. I would like to put the crossover pipes on. Engine is out for rebuild.
My plan is to use a dremel/hacksaw/sawsall to cut the welds off and then somehow expand the pipes to accept the crossover.
Am I crazy to attempt this?
Pipes are rusty from sitting for a long time but still serviceable.
It would probably be worthwhile to take the exhaust pipes to a muffler shop and get some new nipples welded in. There are expansion tools that will round out dents in pipes, but I think you are asking too much if they have been crushed flat or nearly so.
I'm forever trying stuff like this, and it never works out right. Endlessly screw around with it; get it close; call around to see who'll even look at it; and, find some Bubba who'll do a lousy job because he knows it's a kluge. Lots of work, time, and money for a cob job.
Allen will sell you the front pipes and the crossover pipes only. He advertises complete systems. But I called him and bought the front pipes only. I was replacing headers, and didn't need anything beyond the fronts.
Yep! If you can buy the head pipes and the crossover only, that would save you a lot of grief. I'm assuming that you'll have to buy the crossover anyway. Now all you have to do is get the old rusy head pipes and tail pipes apart........
