    Wiper Motor - 1968

Checked with GM Parts Direct, but part number 5044683 (Wiper Motor) is not available.

Anyone know of a good, quick source to get one, or if another part number is a service replacement part for this motor that will work?

Tried NAPA, and they said they could order one, but I'm in a hurry, and don't want to get ripped by the usual Vette houses.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Regards,

    Rich

The 1968 Corvette wiper motor assembly is a unique-to-1968 Corvette item. The PRODUCTION part number of GM #5044683 was NEVER available in SERVICE so you'll NEVER find an NOS SERVICE part under that number. However, that number MAY appear on the label actually found on the motor assembly inside of a GM/Delco box with another SERVICE part number printed on the box.

In SERVICE, the part number for the 68-only wiper motor was originally GM #4918712. The motor assembly in boxes with this part number on the box usually carried the original 5044683 part number on a label on the motor. Unfortunately, this part was discontinued in August, 1986 and replaced by GM #22054168. This was a VERY similar, new Delco motor assembly. Once again, though, this part was discontinued in February, 1999. It was replaced by a remanufactured Delco-parts system assembly of GM #12368611. Examples of this part number that I've seen were an atrocity. They were a very cheap rebuild and the wiring harness pigtail lacked a connector; just stripped wire ends, The 1968 Corvette motor uses a unique-to-1968 wiring configuration and connector, so that deficiency in the "rebuild" was rather critical. I don't even think that the 12368611 remains available from GM.

Aftermarket, parts-store rebuilds are available but may suffer from the same deficiencies as the Delco rebuilds when they were available. Plus, it's unlikely that any parts store is going to stock this item; they'll have to order it from their warehouse who may have to, in turn, get it from another regional or national warehouse.

So, while I haven't answered your question specifically, I think you'll get the idea.

Joe, thanks a lot for info., I would never have known all that, except for the "unique to 68 bit".

Would another year motor work as a replacement, like 69, 70, etc.?

Good news is that I finally got the vacuum sys hooked up, and the headlight doors working. Probably haven't operated for 20 years, until today. It's a miracle.

Thanks again for the info. -

The 1968 wiper motor and the 69-72 motors are very similar and most of the components that make up the assemblies are the same, but the wiring for the 68 is unique. I wouldn't know how to convert a 69-72 motor to the 68 configuration, if it can even be done, at all.

          Thanks Joe.

I did not get to the point where I could begin to break down the wiper motor assm. today to determine what's wrong.

The motor runs, but the drive shaft for the wiper blade mechanisms seems to have a "dual action" with some sort of offset gear that spins the shaft while articulating the "drive" shaft part in an offset circular fashion.

Problem seems to be that the final shaft is not spinning, but the it is moving around and around in an offset pattern.

Maybe there's a gear in the drive assm. with the teeth broken or worn off.

I had hoped to just replace the whole thing, and attempt to restore/fix the orginal motor later on.

This one will probably take a while to figure out, or, I'll just have to break down and get that expensive replacement.

          Thanks again for the info.,

            Rich,

I attempted to convert a 69 wiper to work on a 68 Corvette. I did extensive testing and knew how the 69 wiring worked and could make it work on the bench. When I hooked it to the 68 wiring it would not work. Back on the bench it would work again. After spending several days trying variations I gave up on making the 69 motor work on the 68.

If you have a 68 motor some vendors offer a rebuild service, probably all use the same rebuilder. If anyone knows specifically who rebuilds 68 wiper motors I would appreciate a lead.

            Thank you,

            Verle

To make matters worse, most of the component parts to repair the motor assembly, including the one that you described, are no longer available from GM or Delco.

                Hi Verle:

If you go to Dr. Rebuild site, and go to A -Z search on his page, go to "W" Wiper Motor - Repair/Rebuild Service. This link should take you to it directly - http://www.docrebuild.com/dr-r-web/wiper-motor.PDF

It's a PDF file that you can download and save to your commputer hard drive too.

                Unit Price: $54.97
                Core Value*: $10.00

                Weight: 4.5 lbs.
                Warranty: LLT

If Joe is correct, the Autozone unit is probably not that good, but, I may order it into the store, make sure it matches my original motor, and cannabilize parts from it to make my original work again.

For $54.00 vs. $142.00+, it may well be a good way to go.

As I'm in the process of repairing the vacuum stuff and wipers, I can used the saved money for the multitude of stuff I'm finding out I need to replace!

Another rebuild option is Steve Hack who owns Eastern Corvettes in Ohio. He taught a class in Bloomington a few years ago, and really knows the ins and outs of the wiper motors and park mechanisms. I would not hesitate using him after seeing the care and attention he demonstrated in the class....Craig
