    61 voltage regulator

HAve a friend with an early built 61 315hp car. The voltage regulator died and he was going to send the "original" off to be rebuilt. Now, I don't think the regulator on the car actually is the original. My references indicate a number of 9001 D on a 60-62. His regulator is a 9002. Am I correct? I suspect the regulator was changed years ago. This guy has owned the car for 20 years or so, but the car is 43 years old and had 20+ years to get a new regulator before he bought it.

    1961 9002D 1st design 315hp-4 1/8 pully 35 amp
    1961 9002D 2nd design 315hp 4 1/8 pully 35 amp
    1962 9002E 250 & 300hp 3 5/8 pully 35 amp
    1962 9002E 340 & 360hp 4 1/8 pully 35 amp

    Hope this helps

That helps a lot. Sounds like his regulator is probably correct after all. I'm not sure what aplphabetic suffix it has, but I'll pass this info on.

        Ed,
What is the date code on the regulator???? The date will tell you if it is original. 002D regulators are scarce, difficult to replace and well worth rebuilding.

It's so scrungy I didn't even look for a date code.

Dave, what is the date code format on regulators? Never have paid any attention to them.

              Ed,
As an example the 002D regulator in my 61 is KO. October(K) 1960(0).

                Re: 61 voltage regulator

Would not "K" normally indicate November? Or did Delco have a different system? This particular car was built in Oct '60, so I guess the regulator would probably be dated a month or two earlier?

                  Ed,
On a stamped date code(as opposed to) a cast date code the I is not used. That allows the use of M on stamped dates for the month of December. K is November on a cast date but is October on a stamped date. You could use anything dated between April and September applying the 6 month rule and if the car is a mid to late October build you could use an October dated regulator.
