66 Steering Gear lube?

What type of lubricant goes in the steering gear box? My 66 Chassis Service Manual specifies "EP Chassis Lube". Is this a special type grease/oil used specifically for steering gear boxes or can I use a good grade general purpose grease?

Was just looking thru some old materal and found that the GM "Steering Gear Lubricant" was part # 1051052 and has been changed to # 1052182. Is now a 10 oz tube and is sold by GM in quanties of 4 tubes at about $4.50 each.

Thanks to all for the info, I'll swing by the local GM dealer tonight on my way home. FYI...stuck a screw driver into the access hole to check level and what I found had the consistency of motor oil. Must have been in there a long time.

Floyd,

The procedure is to remove the forward bolt (known as the "lower") and outboard bolt (in the center, "CHECK LUBE"). Insert the filling device in the lower bolt hole and inject lube until it appears in the outboard bolt hole. At that point the gear is now filled to the correct level. There is a warning not to overfill. I would stop when you can first see the lube appear inside (by watching through the outboard bolt hole). Hope this helps. Tom #24014
