    Black-out paint

I am about to finish my second 1966 and no one can tell me what paint is applied by mitt to the front swaybar and the mufflers. If it is going to be applied to mufflers, it has to be A HIGH TEMPERATURE PAINT. Also it has to be rather thick. Can anyone help? Thanks

Do you really think GM had somebody with a mitt to black out mufflers as the cars proceeded down the assembly line - NOT. Urban Legend according to some of the best experts that actually ran the plants.

The 1966 Ncrs manual says so.

I could SWEAR that was Bubba's job.

His other name was Sticky, 'cuz that's what he was by the end of the week after all that black stuff dripped down his arms. Used to dip him in a barrel of turpentine at 3:30 on Friday afternoon just to clean him off for the weekend. The Missus preferred him that way.

Jim You are correct on what the judging manual says and I believe it is an urban legend. I got points taken off because the judges at the Regional and National "knew" the idiot who did it. There was no reasoning with them. As far as I am concerned if someone did this for a living they were an idiot.

I think I can guess who may have judged the car, then. Odds are I spent time at a Regional last year trying to tell the same guy that it didn't happen. The judge swore he met the guy from St. Louis who used to do the work. There was no reasoning with him, especially after he'd had too much to drink, that it never happened that way.

I think the worker's name was Sticky.

The closer-to-truth explanation is that the exhaust systems arrived at St. louis fresh off the production line. They had oil and grease on them, and more was added as they went through storage and installation at St. Louis. Now throw some cheap black paint on them, and Voila! they look similar to if someone might have "mitted" them. Actually, you were seeing the oil streaks under the paint.
