My 86 has an electrical problem effecting the entire panel (tach, speed, temp, fuel, etc). The problem is sometimes it works, but most of the time it may display some electronics then locks into that display and never changes. Sometimes there is nothing at all displayed. In some ways it appears there is a short and I have looked for loose wires and have found none. Do I need to replace the electronics or has someone found a common problem to this.... thanks for your help. henry

Re: 86 Insrtument Control Panel
Henry,
Years ago I had a similar problem with an '84 Vette that I had at the time. The symptoms were a display that would flash on & off -- not quite the same but similar. This happened twice. The first time I went to the dealer & they replaced the display with a rebuilt one for $300 (this was in 1989 or so).
The second time I took out the dash myself & found a place in Tampa, FL that repairs the displays. When I removed the display, I found a section on the main board that looked like a power supply -- probably some type of DC-DC converter. Some of the components were burned. Cost me $150 the second time.
You may want to seek advice from Gordon Killebrew to see if the problem is in the electronics. It's a good bet it is.
Hope this helps.
