I would like to know whether the steering box on a 1967 corvette should be painted black, left natural, or some combination of the two. I have seen a couple of original cars that have traces of black paint on the steering box but I'm not sure if they were completely painted or just had overspray on them. Thanks!

Re: 1967 corvette steering box
According to Mr. Tripoli's book for years 1963 - 1972, the steering box should be natural finish as well as the pitman arm.
The three sterring box cover bolts should be plated.
Steering box to frame carriage bolts should be black.
When I rebuilt my 68 box, I also noted traces of black paint on the box as well.
Maybe over spray from the engine compartment blackout process? It's got Me swinging
Hope this answers your question,

Re: 1967 corvette steering box
I had the same question when restoring mine. Although all the originals I have seen (there's a parts yard in my area with a box of over 50 unrestored units)are black, I was advised that the natural finish is preferred during judging. I used Krylon satin clear and it looks good to me.- Top
