This was on my 62 340hp. It has the 8" location for the tab but the bend on the tab is up away from the balancer instead of under it. It looks like a virgin untouched part. Any idea what it is out of?

Re: Help identify small block timing cover
I think I have figured this issue out. My engine had the tab going away from the 8" balancer which did not match Paragon photo or any other vette I had looked at. (did not look at any 62 340 hp) Ebay had a 62 timing cover which matched my part and the seller gave me the following answer to my question.
"Yes , 1962 Tab is welded away from balancer and has oil slinger . 63 and up tabs are SPOT WELDED under balancer, no oil slinger .
YOUR TIMING TAB IS CORRECT FOR 1962 / 340 hp.
58 to 62 / 6 inch timing tabs are also welded away from balancer ."

Re: Help identify small block timing cover
Chris,
The timing tab on all 62 through early 64 cars with 8" balancer are spot welded with the tab facing up, not down behind the balancer. In January of 1964, the design was changed and the tab was then positioned down, behind the balancer and the part number changed to 3851549.
There were a few other changes made on this assembly at the same time and that design continued until the 1966 model year when another change was made.
Bet there's going to be a lot of 62-64 owners running out to the garage to see which design their car has.- Top
