    under coating overspray, Bubba 1967

I am currently addressing a problem with Bubba's excessive use of undercoating my 67 coupe. Tranny mounts, drive shafts, core supports, and smaller pieces have been sand blasted. What about the spare-tire tub and fan shroud(fiberglass), I don't want to hurt these delicate items. Is this undercoating affected by gasoling? Thank you much!

    Justin,
I just finished removing undercoating on my 72 and I found kerosene the best way. Use latex gloves, be patient and it will come off pretty well. Good Luck.

Block off the areas you don't want to get wet and use spray on paint remover, like Rady Strip. Keep spraying to keep it wet and it will reactivate itself and melt the undercoating. You can also spray the kerosine in the same manner.

        Justin:

Eastwood sells a product called "Under Gone" #31130Z for $9.99 a can. Most of their
Products work well so give them a try. 1-800/345-1178. Good Luck, Bill #20328

Be sure everything is well ventilated!

            Justin,

I tried Undergone from Eastwood. $9 a can and didn't work as well as the kerosene. Kerosene is $2/gallon and goes a long way. I used a spray bottle to apply the kerosene in larger areas and a 1" paint brush in tighter areas. Ventilation is not really a problem as kerosene evaporates slowly. I used a final "wash" of laquer thinner to finish the job.

              Please do not use Gasoline....

One unplanned spark from static electricity, drill motor armature, or any number of other sources and you and your car will be toast.....literally.

Many years ago I had a 62 that was undercoated heavily. After removing the body from the frame and putting it on its side in my garage I was able to get the undercoating off quite easily. I used a small hand held propane torch and (gently) heated the undercoating up until it was soft, then wiped it off the best I could with a putty knife. I then proceeded to wipe the really small amount left off with lacquer thinner & a scotch brite pad. Except for the "small" fire that I started and almost caught the garage on fire all went quite well. When I finished the bottom end was spotless. Oh yes, my handy fire extinguisher saved the day! Good luck if you do this and remember to do small areas at a time.
