'66 BB ORIGINAL TIMING CHAIN SPECS

Were '66 big blocks originally built with double roller timing chains when they were assembled?

      John-----

No PRODUCTION Chevrolet Mark IV or Mark V engine originally used in a PASSENGER CAR or LIGHT TRUCK ever used a double roller or, even, a single roller type timing chain. As John mentioned, some MD and HD truck applications did use a "double roller" chain, but it was not a true "roller" design. All passenger car and light truck timing sets are of the Morse-type design.

Gen VI engines with roller camshafts use a HD single roller design timing set and this chain is a true roller design. No double roller design is available for Gen VI engines even in the aftermarket.

An excellent double roller timing set is available for Mark IV engines as manufactured by Cloyes under their part number 9-3110A. This timing set is a direct retro-fit for Mark IV engines.

        Joe,

The Cloyes 9-1110 is a step down from the 9-3110A in quality. Is there any difference in the size and fit within the cover between these two sets? (I'm asking because the '66 big block with the noise in the timing cover I'm working on, had a 9-1110A installed)

Yes, the 9-1110 is a lower quality piece than the 9-3110A. The 9-3110A costs about 3 times as much as the 9-1110 so you can infer that there IS a significant difference. However, as far as fitment is concerned, they should be about the same. Usually, with these double roller chains, if there is going to be a fitment problem, it will involve interference of the chain with the block. If the timing cover is not distorted or bent, I would not expect a problem with interference with the chain/sprockets and the cover. But, who knows?

I used their Hex-a-just version of the 9-3110A, I can't recall the number. I had no trouble at all with clearing a standard GM cover of with block clearance. This one had the billet pulleys and full roller, plus the infinitely tuneable cams for dialing it in.....Craig
