    54 exhaust problem

Whenever I do any exhaust work I feel that I am being repaid for major sins in a previous life. On my 54 I managed to get the old exhaust system out without breaking any manifold bolts, a major task in itself. My problem is how to install the first section on the driver's side. This is the section that goes from the exhaust manifold to the foward section of the muffler pipe. Puting the rear section thru the frame hole prevents the rest from being able to be turned enough to go up to the manifold. I can cut the section and then splice it, but there must be a correct and easy way. Any help from someone who has not committed major sins in a previous life.

    Re: 54 exhaust problem

Bill: having slept at the foot of the cross the past 59 years, and unaware of ANY sins in a previous life, and having installed pipes on our old 54 at least 3 different times, i 'm certain I was able to get the left side header pipe installed without cutting or hammering or any other Bubba manuevers. Do you have the car on a lift or is the concrete floor preventing enough wiggle room? sorry i can't be any more specific. St. Michael.

        Re: 54 exhaust problem

Glad to hear that it can indeed be done. I said my prayers before bed last night and slept on the issue. Yes indeed the car is on jack stands, but I don't think that down room is a problem. By starting the rear end thru the frame hole the front hockey stick upturn hits a number of things such as the motor mount. Going the other way doesn't leave enough room for the rear end of the pipe tp go up and into the frame hole. I think the real secret is to cut the frame and then to pry it apart with a bottle jack wedged up in there. At least this is what I probably would have done 45 years ago when I still had hair. Actually hearing that it can be done and that a lift helps, I will return to my garage today will renewed confidence and will attempt installation as if I had a lift and lots of space under the car.
