    C1 trunk colors

    Hi,

As you might know I have a Crown Sapphire/Turquoise '59er which I'm restoring and soon I will start on the trunk compartment as well. I'm wondering what colors to apply on the fiber, lining and what color the rubber mat should be for a Crown Sapphire/Turquoise late '59-er and if there are more things to keep in mind when doing this compartment ?

    thanks for any suggestion,

    Re: C1 trunk colors

The trunk area is all the interior color, turquiose with out the metalflake. The mat is turq. I bought one from romeo eng, it was judged to shiney on the back otherwise ok. The real question I ran into was the color of the dash pod. The book and everyone I asked said it should be the interior color, but when I stripped the paint off the bottom layer was EXTERIOR? I painted it interior and it was judged correct, but I still believe it should be exterior color on the dash pod. Bill

      Bill,

I also noticed the dash (upper and lower aluminum parts) to be outside (light blue-ish, metalflake) coloured. I also just paint sprayed it the interior Turquoise colour. Did we both made a huge error here ?

      greetings,
      Rob.

        Rob,
Unless I am badly mistaken (and I am sure someone will tell me if I am), The only part of the interior that should be painted the interior color should be the instrument cluster, defroster bezels, speaker grille, dash end caps, kick panels, steering column and the radio/clock console divider. The trunk and top compartments should be the exterior color as well.

I believe the trunk and conv. top area should be interior color. Because of how mine was when I stripped it. But the dash pod is still my biggest question? I have a may 8th car, there was a cut off that it changed going into 60. Bill

            Re: C1 trunk colors

If I can add to what John mentions above....

For trunk and convertible top compartment lid painting, 1959 was an "in between" year. The 1958 painting instructions were to paint the underside of both the trunk and top compartment lids the interior color which matches what has been observed on 1958 cars. For 1960, both lids were to be painted exterior color which also matches what has been observed. For 1959, the painting instructions were the same as 1958 (interior color), but late 1959 cars have been observed with trunk and top compartment lids painted the exterior color. The change in painting instructions made sense since it was time consuming to paint a 2-tone lid.

When I discussed this with judges when restoring my 1959, the consensus was to follow the painting instructions unless you have evidence showing your car's trunk and top compartment lids were originally painted exterior color. In my case (car #2167), black was the exterior color with a red interior....I could tell the original color of the trunk, top compartment, and the underside of both lids was red.

Also, on the steering column and hub: only the 12" closes to the steering wheel was actually interior color. And, the judges look for slightly different shades and gloss levels between the instrument housing, the steering column, and the steering wheel hub. These were all painted at different times by different people so they were ever so slightly different!

Sorry guys, I forgot we were talking about a 59 model here! You are correct that all but late 59 care were two-toned. My 60 was originally exterior color on the trunk and top comaprtment as was my 59, but my 59 is an Agust car.

                John,

Currently my trunk is exterior as well, supporting the two tone theory. I persume a Turqouse mat and lining should complete the restoration of my trunk then for now (no painting of the interior just yet).

                greetings,
                Rob.
