Was the LT1 ever available with an automatic? I just saw a '71 Camaro with the LT1 and an automatic (documented). Checked the "Black Book" and for 70 & 71 it does not list a suffix for the LT1 auto, but for 72 it showes a suffix of CRS as LT1 and auto. But I have never seen one or ever heard of one. Were any built?
I don't know of any documented LT1 Corvettes with automatic transmissions. The early Z28 with the 302 were 4 speed only, but in 1970 1/2 they offered the automatic with the new LT1 350 in the Z28.

I believe it was the late Phil Hawkins of the St. Louis plant who liked to tell the story of a plant exec who tried to "fake" an LT-1 automatic. Apparently he ordered a base motor automatic car, and either painted the intake orange or put on a base motor intake before the engine was installed (can't remember exactly). He then made sure this engine went into "his" car as it was built. Unfortunately, he was found out by the others who drove the car during its plant test period and before he could take delivery. Apparently it had much more power than the other test cars.... Anyway, he was fired.
