What has to be one of the simplest adjustments is driving me crazy. I can't seem to adjust the remote door opening mechanism on my 67 coupe so that it works consistently. If there is to much tension, the lock will not reset. If there is not enough tension, the lever travels to the stop in the door panel without releasing the latch. I must have had the door panel off five times in the last two weeks trying to find the proper adjustment. What seemes to happen most often is that the mechanism will work for a while after the adjustment but eventually gets to the point where the lever reaches the end of the opening without releasing the latch. Is there any trick to gettting this adjustment right?

Re: 67 Door Lock Remote Adjustment
John,
When I took my door panel off to do some work inside, I noticed a previous owner had used a thin wire to hold one of the various rods in position. Not knowing why he had done this, I removed it. Well, it was put there to fix the same problem you're having. On occasion, the knob would go full travel without opening the door mechanism. Try to watch the rod(s) involved in opening the lock mechanism and see which one is the problem, and you can either bend it back in shape or hold it in a working position with some thin wire like mine was.- Top

Re: 67 Door Lock Remote Adjustment
Have you actually taken the latching mechanism out of the car and cleaned it? Iirc, it is held to the face of door by three large #3 Phillips screws. Once the clips are off, take the door latching mechinism out and clean it. If you haven't done so it may be quite dirty. My 66 had grease left over from the Jurassic Period and some of it was quite hard.

Re: 67 Door Lock Remote Adjustment
I haven't taken the locking machanism out. Did the performance improve when you cleaned out the old grease? I had a problem with my left headlight motor and the Jurassic period grease was the problem there, not the gear as many seem to find.- Top

Re: 67 Door Lock Remote Adjustment
John, look down the list at the question about the Mark of Excellence post and you will see a photo of the three large Phillips screws holding the latching mechanism in. The main reason I took my mechanism out was that I was painting the car. In addition, the latching and locking were sloppy. I soaked the mechanism in solvent for a few hours and brushed out some VERY old grease. As I said in my first post, some of the grease was as hard as gravel. Probably dirt, grease, and age combined to make it that hard. The door worked like new when I was done.
As a side note, three years ago, I bought a 30000 mile 72 with a driver's door that was very difficult to lock/unlock. Sooooo, off come the panel and out comes the latch. Cleaned it the same way and it works like new. Besides, what do you have to lose? Take pictures of the three (?) clips that hold the rods to the various parts of the latch.
