    Riviting Question

After a very long search I found an original 62 jack handle. Unfortunetly it's missing the rivit that holds the two pieces togther. I'd like to know if the correct rivit is available and what is the right way to install it. Thanks Rich NCRS #2276

    Re: Riviting Question

    Rich,

I'm really not familiar with your 62 handle, but I gotta believe it is similar to the C2 handles with regard to the "pivot rivet"

I've replace these using a piece of 1/4" mild 4130 steel rod. Cut it so that approximately 3/16" protrude from both sides and then place it over an anvil or heavy vise pad and start wailing on the rod end with a 5 lb hammer until both ends swell and mushroom over.

If in fact a "real" steel rivet is correct, the installation method could be accomplished using a rivet set (matching the rivet head) in an impact hammer.

Be sure to check the ability to still pivot the handle though. If you swell the shank to much, the hinge effect will be lost and you will need to drill it out and start over.
