    C1 Oil Pan - Thanks

Long post. But, because of this site I now have the oil, filter and even a new oil pan for my '62. Y'all have been real helpful.

From information on this board, I picked up the Oil Pan GM Part #359937 from my local chevy dealer yesterday. Unfortunately after I got home and really checked it out, it was dented and I'll be taking it back today to see about an exchange.

It did come with gasket set #14079399 which, from reading the archives, should not be used. In its place I will order the 1-piece gasket OS34510T FelPro from Summit.

Also, I've read that the oil drain plug is not correct, so I'll be on the lookout for an original (the one in the car is not orginal as someone helicoiled new threads for using a very large replacement plug).

I've read in my "1963 Motor's Auto Repair" and the "1953-1962 Corvette Servicing Guide" that because I have an aluminum Powerglide transmission I must remove the starter before the oil pan will come out or go on. ---Anyone have any other tips or tricks?

From the archives, I also know to note where the plug wire clips are located so that they can go back on in the correct spot.

From the archives I've read to paint it chevy engine orange (not sure about the exact color). ---When does it get painted? Before it goes on the car or after I've put it in? And, what about the bolts and clips?

This 'ole car is turning out to be fun...I think.

Re: C1 Oil Pan - Thanks

In my 63 there was no need to remove the starter when installing the oil pan on a powerglide car. I just removed the transmission dust cover. I would think a 62 would be similar unless the starter mounts differently.
It would be easiest to paint the oil pan out of the car. You might scratch it when installing but it would be easier to paint the bolts and touch it up after. If you paint it in place there are a lot of areas that you will have to mask and it may be difficult to get good coverage in some areas.
