    67 drive shaft

    Dear Members,
I have moved effort towards the drive shaft with its original non-grease fitted u-joints. All seems to be original and untouched. My question is the orange, then blue stripes around the rear end of the shaft. Maybe about half an inch wide and obviously done by hand. Also there seems to be some green dripped on the end too, any ideas? I have made references, so I can accurately reapply the colors. Than you much!

The marks you refer to were also on my Drive Shaft. They were probably marks that indicated the shaft had been thru some Quality assurance tests prior to installation. You will find similiar marks (paint daubs etc) on various parts of the car. The green mark near the u-joint signified a particular orientation of the drive shaft to the differential yoke for the best possible balance. My drive shaft also had orange/blue stripes about 3/4 inch wide as well as the green daub on the shaft and at the u-joint area. These stripes are significantly wider than what is published. I too documented before/after pictures for the doubters. If you need a picture of mine please e-mail me.

Quanta has some very good detailed information about the stripes.

I have been working with a friend who just purchased a very original 68k mile 1967 coupe that has what appears to be masking tape around the differential end of the drive shaft. All of the normal colors are present as well. Is this common, or just something that happened - - - ? POP and tank sticker are both present, as well as 4 known owners. Car was sold new at Queen City Chev in Cincinnatti.
