78 rear window trim

I have seen several colors on the exterior rear window trim. Some seem to match the body color, some are black, some are silver or grey. I have a red 78 and am wondering what the original color is for this trim. Some say it was polished stainless with no paint or color at all. Is that right??? thanks! mitchell

For 1978 I believe that all cars except the Pace Cars had the natural "bright metal" rear window molding. Pace Cars usually had the black painted moldings.

78 rear reveal trim molding came in only three varieties, bright metal, bright metal outer with inner flat black and than flat black. All Pace Cars were black and seems after Pace Car production, all subsequent regular production got the black trim.

Early models were divided between the bright metal and mix. Now the tech manual states that 5,000 through 11,000 got the bright metal. My 78 is 9041 and has bright metal. It goes on to state that S/Ns before 5,000 got the mix trim...seems to me in our discussions the earlies were bright metal, mid-years were mix and late metals were black.

But clearly no body color trim. Any trim painted body color are of the personal statement variety!

My original serial 29000+ after pacecars, has mix.

Thanks for the information! Sorry I couldn't respond sooner but my system was down for a couple of days. Mine is 6296 so I guess it is the bright metal. thanks again mitchell

1978's thru build sequence 11,000 had bright stainless trim. After 11,000 the trim was half semi gloss black and half bright stainless trim. This continued thru the entire model build sequence. All 1978 Pace Cars had a fully painted solid black semi gloss trim. All 1979 thru 1892's were the same full painted trim as the Pace Car. I have seen a number of 1978 Corvettes and I've never seen a known original non Pace Car with a fully painted rear window trim, nor have I seen a known original Pace Care with anything but a fully painted rear window trim.

My 1600 mile original #15398 '78 Silver Annivsary has all bright rear window trim. Must be exceptions to all what is believed to be correct....
