    67 Steering Box Detail

    Can anyone tell me :

What is the correct color of my 67 Steering box?

What color is the firewall supposed to be painted?

There is a white chalk 96 written on the firewall. What does this indicate???

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Hi Steve!

This was a topic a few months back. To reinterate:

    1. Steering box color is a somewhat controversial issue. Apparently some were left natural unpainted while others were painted a glossy black. The judging manual describes as unpainted. If you choose to leave natural, the bolts (& I think washers also) were an unpainted black phosphate. Most boxes I believe also carry a swatch of yellow paint marking.

    2. Firewall marking "96" may indicate assembly line job number. Several others on this board are far more knowledgible than I to answer this.

    3. The firewall and engine compartment was sprayed a "semi-gloss black" during the blackout process. Other painted parts include the hood hinges, ends of the female hood latches, the release cabel between the latches, and all the various clips on the firewall. No wiring/accessories were installed at this time.

Hope this helps. Would reccomend the Nolan Adams book, Fact Book, and NCRS judging manual + looking at original or "correctly" restored cars.

Don't forget if painting the Engine Compartment, the Rad Core support and the rubber flaps to seal the "A" arms were installed at the time the compartment was painted.

The yellow inspection paint mentioned is visible only on an unpainted steering box. On black painted boxes the yellow mark is under the paint.
