in my search for a body to do a c2 non orginal car .. i have found some sites that offer theft recovery, insurnace claims etc corvettes for sale .. anyone ever had any good or bad luck with dealing with these guys ... OR is the correct thing to do mis to find a basket case instead ... looking for a little guidance .... I have been asked why I want to do this project ... I simply want to build a very comfortable, easy to drive, very dependable C2 .. I don't want to be torn every time I put something on to the car that is not to NCRS specs .. as has been my down fall over the years .. then when I am done // I am afraid to "use" the car .. worried about scatches, etc etc

Re: Ever buy from a salvage source
Having built a number of kit cars and street rods in the past, I can assure you that "building" a car from parts/pieces is a very time-consuming and expensive proposition; even more so when you're combining the dregs of several basket-cases, loaded with rusty old parts, to make one car. I think you'd be much better served to go find a decent C2 "driver" and enjoy it; it'll cost a LOT less than "building" one, and you can hop in and enjoy it right away - there are plenty of them out there.- Top

Re: Ever buy from a salvage source
Buy a late model c-4 with lo miles on it, strip the fiberglass off the rear clip, remove the doors and front clip. then you start bonding the needed c-2 fiberglass repo panels to the c-4 frame/floor pan/ cowl. you'll have to fabricate attaching points for the c-2 door hinges and hood hinges. You'll be able to sell the doors and front clip of the c-4 if undamaged. this way you end up with the c-4 creature comforts( heater, A/C,radio, lumbar and power seats etc etc.) which all are already attached to the c-4 cowl/floorpan. See Restorer, vol 27 3 4 , page11. good luck. mike- Top

Re: Ever buy from a salvage source
Hey Mike, thanks for the reminder...I just dug up your article and read it (must have been a goodie I missed).
I have a friend that keeps talking about buying a NOM C2 convertible to make into a "street rod", and I keep saying "Are you crazy?!". Your approach sounds better to me...late model amenities, handling, and electronically managed horsepower with classic looks. I'll pass your article on to him.
BTW, I guess the "Farm Use Only" is to avoid the evironmental inspection and titling hassles? No problem for him...he just finished restoring a NASCAR stock car (paint and decal scheme from Viagra car ) and made it street legal with title and plates. Local law enforcement has given him a couple of long, strange looks, but he hasn't had to explain it yet.- Top

Re: Ever buy from a salvage source
chuck: luckily we don't have annual inspections in western md and no antiques or street rods older than 25 yrs have to be inspected, not even initially like the younger cars are required to do(and then only initially, not anually as is the case in WVA etc) Ole farm use has broke into the 12's, driven from cumberland to Galveston, tx and is currently enjoying autocrossing where its just a tad slower than the new ZO6's that are SCCA preped.I usually have the Air cond and cd playing when I pull up to stage the old girl. the Porsche guys poop themselves. the nice thing about the old farm use is it looks like a real vette and runs like the new ones. mike.- Top
