    Watch out: e-Bay scam

    Hi,

I receive recently already twice a private mail that someone has seen I was bidding on a Corvette hardtop which I didn't win and now he is offering a restored hardtop for only appr. $ 1000. In the mail a lot question marks are displayed and a reference to www.ebay.tw.com. If you react on the mail and ask a for additional information, e.g. pictures and a phone number I found out quite easily this is a scam. Be warned of this manner of trying to rip you of !!!

    greetings,
    Rob.

    Re: Watch out: e-Bay scam

Thanks Rob, I've heard the same person contacted someone else last week on the same issue.
There's also another one on ebay to be aware of. Some guy was advertising a new 8 inch "finned balancer" for what seemed like a very reasonable price. He even showed a picture of the 8" balancer sitting with the new GM box and gave the 3817173 part number so everyone would assume it was a genuine NOS GM part but it's actually a reproduction, not a real original. He used "finned balancer" as key search words. Beware!

      eBay scam & other things

      1. People have been running eBay scams for some time. The latest is to get a hold of your e-mail address and send you an email that will have you log on to THE SCAMMERS "ebay" site. Their site will look identical to the eBay site except for a slight difference in the address. Always verify that you are on http://www.ebay.com For that matter, always check the intenet address of where you want to be very carefully.

      2. Another problem is a virus that infects a computer and thieves the email addresses from it. The addresses are NOT used to send spam to, but used as the received from address in the spam sent out. The recipient of the spam thinks the spam is from you, when in actuality it is a stolen address off a computer. You'll know someone you know has been hit when you start getting a ton of undeliverable messages to addresses you've never heard of before.

      3. Computers! Aren't they wonderful?

This looks a little strange too! 1967 Corvette on EBAY, LOOK AT THE VIN#
It looks like the VIN for a 1984 Vette?

Did you also note that it has the really rare 6 cylinder option?

You might also notice in one picture the car has the 427-style hood with black stinger, but in the larger picture, it has a small block hood. I guess the the 427 ci 6-cylinder doesn't need the larger hood.

                    Report suspected scams to ebay!!!

I received an email that I suspected was a scam and reported it to ebay. They will investigate it and follow-up with you if it was a scam and attempt to shut it down. You can report scams here on the ebay site:

Re: Report suspected scams to ebay!!!

I have attached an e-mail that was sent to me. It had all the Ebay color logos and colors that you would expect from Ebay. I sent a copy to Ebay Administration and they said that it is a SCAM and was an attempt at identity theft. They are researching it now. I received the note 3 more time.

Contact Ebay if you receive it, If you did respond, I suggest you cancel your credit card.

I do with all I see

It is the only way to keep it somewhat safe.

I report not only the scams that rip us off, but the ones that are not fair to us, like those who advertise a No Reserve auction and when you have a deal on that $100 part for $25, they pull it seconds before the end.

eBay has no ehtics in that regard, but they do get upset that the guy ripped them off gor their Reserve Fees, so that is the course you have to take.

eBay really doesn't like to help you report violations and so their report areas are a bit tricky to navigate, but it is worth it to get these kind of people off.

                          Re: Watch out: e-Bay scam

I deal with E-bay all the time and have had people back out of deals at the last minute. I have reported these issues a number of times and get the standard "we are looking into it" response. Never have gotten any response besides that on any issue. E-bay does not follow up on issues where people back out of deals or drop things out at the last minute. I only hope that if I ever get ripped off from the product after I have payed for it that they do something. Not holding my breath though.

Not holding your breath is a good idea when it comes to e-bay. My son "bought" a football jersey on e-bay and it turned out to be a scam. A year later and still no resolution. I buy things but never at an amount that would hurt if I lost it. In all fairness, I have had 9 transactions in the last year, all ok, non of which risked more than $50.

If you purchase from a seller using Paypal, you have the same rights as using your credit card normally. Dispute the charge, fill out a dispute form and it will taken off your bill, with no acrued interest. Quite an inconvenience, but atleast a recourse. Most sellers offering Paypal are reputable since they know this. I purchased an expensive item and when I received it it wasn't in working order as advertised, disputed it through my mastercard and the charged was taken off permanently.
