63 headliner refinishing

I am contemplating refinishing the headliner in my 63 which is finished in what appears to be a flat black finish. Has anyone on this board tried or had their headlner refinished? If so I would appreciate the benefit of your experience and recommendations. I don't know if you can just repaint it with a flat black paint or should it be refinished with a black dye. I haven't actually done this. But the headliner is a fiberboard with little holes in it. What ever you use it should be thin so as not to plug the holes. I have judged cars where you can tell that the headliner was "repainter". I would try in an area that the trim covers up. A flat spray paint might do ok jsut misted on. Sorry not much help.
