    Rivets: WSW Door

I am looking for some information on the rivets used on the windshield wiper door of the 1968-72 Corvettes. There is one rivet on each end that secures the moulding to the WSW door. What size rivets are these? Where can I purchase these rivets? How are they installed? Thanks for any info.

    Tony----

Subsequent to our discussion of last Saturday and after I returned home, I tried to research the issue of the 68-72 windshield wiper door molding retaining rivets. If you check the AIM, as I expect you have already, you find that it specifies a screw to retain the molding at the ends. I've checked every 68-72 AIM and ALL specify a screw, although 2 different screws were specified over the 5 year's production. No where is a rivet specified. However, rivets were apparently used; my car has the rivets and several 68-72s that I observed on Saturday had the rivets.

I have checked many old parts books, including Standard Parts Catalogs, and I can find no reference to the rivet and no diagram of a rivet which matches the head design of the ones on my car. Furthermore, I can find no listing for the rivet in any of the vendor catalogs I've checked, including Dr. Rebuild who is usually best for parts like this.

    But I haven't given up.........

        Joe & Tony,

Check a mill supply catalog. McMaster Carr is one company that comes to mind. These things are called drive rivets and have a screw-like thread on the outside of the shaft, but they are driven in like a nail. I suspect they are pushed in with hydraulic pressure rather than pounded with a hammer.

It seems to me that I have seen these for sale in one of the Corvette catalogs, maybe Paragon or C Central. They are "push in" or "drive" rivets, as Terry states. I'll look.....maybe my memory is failing!! Chuck

Re: Rivets: 1968-72 WSW Door - Dimensions

Would someone with original rivets in their WSW door measure the head diameter so I can order the correct size? I did not have my calipers with me in Boston. Also, if someone has the rivets removed, could you give me the other dimensions (shaft length, diameter)?

                Thanks.

Re: Rivets, Screws or Both, Terry?

                    Terry,

Are these then often mistaken as screws, or do people often use screws as replacements, since "both" have threads?

Or, were both screws and rivets used over time?

Re: Rivets, Screws or Both, Terry?

I think Terry meant that they are a special type of push-in rivet that has some threads like a screw has. This is similar to concrete nails which have subtle threads but are obviously nails because of their flat heads. Likewise, these WSW door rivets function like other rivets (hold two pieces of sheet material together) and have a round hemispherical head resembling a rivet or nail but are installed by pushing in position like a nail rather than twisting (as a screw). Hope this helps.

Terry, please correct me if I butchered what you were thinking.
