C3 number question

I have some pictures of my 68 when the car was being cleaned up after a 17 year "nap". There is a "435" written in chalk somewhere but I can't tell exactly where from the picture. The car is an L71 (435 HP),so I assumed that's what it meant. After reading some article in old "Corvette Fever" issues, I am more confused. This article leads me to believe that it is the sequence number or whatever the right term is, that went from 1 to 499 and started over. Only problem is I have the order copy and the number hand written on that is "428". The last 3 digits of the VIN are 941. This article also said the VIN should be close to the sequence number, which it is if they started over at 499.

What do you guys think the "435" that is written on the body represents?

Rich, it's the car's sequence number. You will find it probably three, maybe four separate places on the body. My understanding from previous discussion is that the hand written number on the order copy only very rarely matches the sequence number. Check the archives; John Hinckley has explained this in a few other threads.

FYI, I just checked my build sheet and the number written on that is 33 and my vin number is 35533. not that this helps your case, but I thought I would chime in. If I remember correctly, your in the Metro LI Chapter. I've read many of your posts and look forward to seeing your car at the next meet.

My Corvette Order Copy (build sheet) handwritten number is 65 and my vin# is 15065.

Thanks very much for all that info. I was not there when the pictures were taken, but I do have another picture that shows "35" as you describe. I think the first one might be the one you describe as behind the seats. I will bring these pictures to the next local get together and see what comes up.

Thanks for your response. Yes, looking forward to getting out. I guess the next local Judged meet is on the North Shore in Nassau. Glen Cove? I'm not into the judging thing, but I'll try to get there as sportsman. I'd like to have some other people familiar with C3's look at it.

For what it is worth, the hand written, circled number on my 1968 BB tank sticker is 431 and my VIN is 442, also the Order number - typed on the tank sticker - is 06430. I am confused myself. Well, at least my VIN tag and engine numbers match.
