    C1 59: Clutch bushing

    Hi all,

I just managed to hammer out what was left of the previous clutch bushing but now I'm wondering how to get the slightly larger new bushing in. I don't have torch yet and am a bit reluctant to play around with it in the engine compartment.

PS I would love to receive lots of pictures of the 1x 4bbs carburator setup and tubbing for a '59-er since that is gonna be one of the next job (installing the correct carburator).

    thanks,
    Rob.

PSS Don't forget to look at the F1 this evening (I'm gonna watch it tonight 4 am local time) !

Absolutely no heat should be used nor is it required to aid installation of this type bushing. Heat would destroy the elastomer component and make insertion of the steel shell MORE DIFFICULT. So, it's good that you don't have a torch as far as this is concerned.

This type bushing can usually be driven in with a hammer. Use a socket with an OD about the same as the OD of the flange on the bushing as a driving tool. I'd lubricate the OD of the bushing with chassis grease to help avoid any galling as the interference fit is achieved.

      Rob -

You can use two sockets and a bolt and washers to pull it in; use a socket on one side large enough to admit the bushing, one on the other side that fits the flange on the other end of the shell, and a long bolt with flat washers on the end of each socket, and a nut. Hold the bolt hex with one wrench and tighten the nut with another, and it will pull the bushing into the hole and seat it. Lube the O.D. of the bushing shell as Joe mentioned.

This bushing is the clutch pedel rod bushing isn't it?
I replace mine. After taking the old one out which was a chore. I cleaned the opening out with my Dremal tool and wire bit. Ilube the opening and bushing and it slide nicely. If you having a little more trouble with your's you can attach a sanding drum bit on your Dremal and very carefully and lightly sand the inside of the bracket where the bushing slides into. BE CAREFUL NOT TO SAND TOO MUCH, A LITTLE THEN CHECK THE FIT. You don't want to have to buy a new crossshaft assemble.

It'll go in without heat. Just did mine. Don't use heat. Heat would burn that rubber in there.

I used a socket that fit on the metal flange; a bigger socket on the other side; lubrication; and, squeezed it in bewtween the jaws of a vice.

Thanks all for your help !

            All,

I'll go for the dremel option since the bracket is still mounted in the car and I can't get a vice in there...

thanks all for your suggestions, as always a big help!

            greetings,
            Rob.
