Starter solenoid on my 327/300 clicks but starter does not engage. Battery is charged and posts/cables clean. All starter electrical connections are tight. Starter was not dragging prior to failing to engage. Before I pull the starter and have it tested, any ideas on what I may have overlooked? Another test that I can perform? Something with the ignition switch that could cause this? Thanks.
Something you can try that will not cost you anything but some of your time is to rotate the connection 180 degrees where the battery positive cable is attached. Just remove the battery cable, them remove the nut that retains the connection post and turn the post 180 and install the retainer nut and battey cable. What you have done is providing a new contact area. If you have ever had a solenoid apart you will know. Only half of the contact area is used in starting the car by design. Wear does occur on this piece.
I have also had your same problem and I thought it was the solenoid. Turned out to be the starter brushes. The brushes were really worn down.
if solenoid clicks, no problem with ignition switch. pull starter, disassemble and rebuild the starter and soleniod or have auto elect. shop do it . good luck. mike
