my 71 LS-5 has a 3.08 rear end gear. This gear is worthless other than winning a bet that the car would not go 140 mph. I am thinking a 3.55 or 3.70 what do you think given that the car has a 4spd with a 1983 doug nash super T-10 with I believe is a 2.43 first gear

Re: LS-5 rear end ratio
I will be curious as to the response on this. I have a 71 LS-5 with Automatic and Air, and the 3:08 has got to be the worst performing rear end Chevrolet could have put in this auto. I have had my engine rebuilt by one of the notable NASCAR teams out of Mooresville, NC, raised the compression, changed the Cam to a more agressive profile etc. The horsepower is there but the rearend is killing it.
I plan on putting in the 3:55 gears from all I have read. The 3:70 was available with the 4 Speed. You can bet anything is better than the 3:08.- Top

Re: LS-5 rear end ratio
I have a 69 427/400 automatic with a 3.08 rear. I'm fairly pleased with the package. Just ran a 13.80 ET on street tires at the Vintage Thunder drag races last month. Drove the same car on the road tour to Collinsville last summer and got about 14MPG. There's no doubt that nothing "wakes up" a car like a set of gears. I'm planning to pull my rear this winter, as it's "howling" a bit. I've been considering going to 3.36's, but I don't want to sacrifice drivability. Chuck1963 Corvette Conv. 327/360 NCRS Top Flight

Re: LS-5 rear end ratio
Chuck,
I've got 3.36's in my small block, and there is no problem with driveabilty. I've taken it across the Eastern half of the country a couple of times and it runs well on the highway with this gear.
No, it won't pull any stumps but its great for my daily driver.
